Micro and Meso Scale Robotic Assembly

چکیده
Some of the challenges associated with micro systems assembly are examined in this paper, and illustrated with examples of on-going research at the authors’ institution. One of the basic challenges in precision assembly is the need for very high accuracy over a large range of motion. We address this challenge through a “multiscale” approach. This involves the design of assembly tools and processes at multiple scales, and their integration into coherent system architectures. Parallelism is an important aspect of this architecture, with the goal of enabling high throughput, fault tolerant assembly at moderate cost. The modularity of the architecture is also important, given the need to frequently reconfigure microsystems assembly cells for small batch production. In this paper, we present several concepts for the development of multiscale robotic tools for the assembly of microsystems. Numerical simulations and experimental results are used to illustrate the relevance of the proposed approaches. Extensions to manipulation at the nanoscale are briefly discussed. We conclude with some guidelines for the design of multiscale assembly systems.

A number of unique challenges arise in fabricating and assembling complex mechanisms at the meso-scale (hundreds of microns to centimetres). In general, for a complex multi-part mechanism at this length scale, no single machining technique can produce all the necessary parts—or often even a single individual part. Towards developing a comprehensive set of ‘best practices’ for combining multiple...
متن کاملModular Robotic Platform for Silicon Micromechanical Assembly
As no reliable methods is available to manipulate component whose typical size is up to 100 μm, current industrial assembled products contained only components down to this physical limit. In that scale, micro-assembly requires specific handling strategies to overcome adhesion and high precision robots. This paper deals with an original robotic system able to perform reliable micro-assembly of ...
متن کاملSoft Actuator for Robotic Applications Based on Dielectric Elastomer: Quasi-Static Analysis
In this paper a new soft actuator based on dielectric elastomer is proposed. The actuator, called ANTagonistically-driven Linear Actuator(ANTLA) has the musclelike characteristics capable of performing the motions such as forward/backward/controllable compliance. Due to its simplicity of configuration and ease of fabrication, it has the advantages to be scale– independently implemented in meso–...
متن کاملPredicting Young’s Modulus of Aggregated Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polymer
Prediction of mechanical properties of carbon nanotube-based composite is one of the important issues which should be addressed reasonably. A proper modeling approach is a multi-scale technique starting from nano scale and lasting to macro scale passing in-between scales of micro and meso. The main goal of this research is to develop a multi-scale modeling approach to extract mechanical propert...
متن کاملMicrostructural Evolution at Micro/Meso-Scale in an Ultrafine-Grained Pure Aluminum Processed by Equal-Channel Angular Pressing with Subsequent Annealing Treatment
Micro-forming with ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials is a promising direction for the fabrication of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) components due to the improved formability, good surface quality, and excellent mechanical properties it provides. In this paper, micro-compression tests were performed using UFG pure aluminum processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) with subsequ...
